Why Keyword Research Matters More Than You’d Think

Here’s a mistake a lot of people make: they write content based on what they think people are searching for. Keyword research fixes that — it tells you what people are actually typing into Google. I recently did a keyword research project focused on social-media-marketing-related searches, and honestly, the results surprised me a little. The obvious choice would’ve been to chase the highest-volume keyword — the one everyone’s searching for. But high volume also usually means high competition, which makes it much harder to actually rank for. Instead, I found a keyword with much lower search volume but noticeably less competition — and it turned out that keyword still brought in consistent, real demand. That was a genuinely useful lesson for me: sometimes the “smaller” opportunity is actually the smarter one. If you’re running a small business, this matters even more. You don’t need to win the internet — you just need to show up for the searches that your actual customers are making. That’s what good keyword research is really about: relevance over vanity numbers.
